The Day Our Hearts Waited For: Brayden’s Surgery and the Strength That Carried Us Through

This day arrived wrapped in fear, hope, and months of prayer. Brayden’s long-awaited surgery was a moment we dreamed of and dreaded at the same time. From early-morning hospital hallways to quiet prayers whispered through tears, every second carried weight. Yet in the middle of uncertainty, we felt something stronger than fear—peace. What unfolded was not just a medical procedure, but a powerful reminder of faith, community, and a child’s incredible courage when it mattered most.

Today stands as one of the most defining days of Brayden’s journey—a day we held in our hearts for months, praying endlessly while wrestling with fear and hope side by side. It was the day his long-anticipated surgery finally became real.

Just after 6:30 in the morning, everything shifted. We walked with Brayden as nurses prepared him, signing final paperwork and reviewing details we already knew by heart. As we moved down the hallway, something small yet meaningful happened. Brayden spotted a wall filled with donated toys and stopped to choose one—a tiny frog ball. In that fragile moment, it felt like more than chance. My late Maw-Maw Mary loved frogs, and the phrase that flooded my mind was “Fully Rely On God.” In the middle of fear, it brought an unexpected smile.

The surgical team was large, steady, and clearly prepared—a reminder of how serious this procedure truly was. Brayden was afraid, understandably so. Yet in a moment I will never forget, he tried to comfort me, telling me to take a deep breath. I prayed over him, over every doctor and nurse, kissed his forehead, and watched as they wheeled him away.

Then something surprising happened. Tears came—but peace followed. A deep, unexplainable calm settled over my heart. Again and again, I felt the same reassurance: “I’ve got him.” That promise carried us through the long hours of waiting. My husband and I returned to our room, passing time by praying, singing, watching movies—anything to steady our hearts.

All day, love surrounded us. Messages, prayers, and words of encouragement poured in nonstop. Every single one mattered. We truly felt lifted and carried by the faith of others.

In the days leading up to surgery, signs appeared everywhere—timing, doctors, technology—each one reinforcing that God was guiding every step. Fear tried to creep in, but faith filled the space instead.

We were blessed with frequent updates during surgery, which eased the waiting. The team used advanced tools, including EEG monitoring and intraoperative MRI, to ensure the safest outcome. At one point, the surgeon noticed a small area of remaining tissue and immediately removed it—a decisive moment that brought incredible relief. Brayden’s vitals stayed stable, and the surgery went smoothly.

When we finally saw him, there he was—tired, sore, but unmistakably Brayden. Smiling. Cracking jokes. Being silly. I even told him he didn’t need to smile after brain surgery—but that’s just who he is.

In classic dad fashion, Brayden’s father spent part of the afternoon trying to jump-start my car before heading home to be with our strong big kids. Life continues, even in the middle of miracles.

During surgery, I felt called to give back. Thanks to overwhelming generosity, nearly $1,300 was raised for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and the Epilepsy Foundation. We are deeply grateful for every donation, prayer, and message.

The road ahead still includes healing and recovery, but today is a victory. Proof of God’s faithfulness. Evidence of Brayden’s strength. And a reminder that none of us walk these journeys alone.

Please keep praying for Brayden as he heals. Thank you for standing with us when we needed it most.
