Our neighbor built too close to our yard, but he had NO idea what we were going to do! 😉🤌 He didn’t respect the rule requiring at least a one-meter setback from the property and even installed an attic with a window overlooking our yard! 😤🤬 Since he denied making a mistake and refused to admit he was wrong, We took control and made him pay for it! 😎🤘 I’ll tell you the rest in this article! 👇
Many property owners experience the irritation of a neighbor constructing directly along the boundary. Since this situation can be bothersome and invasive, we chose to share how we dealt with it.
The issue: A double-story building on the boundary line.
It’s common knowledge that construction rules mandate a minimum one-meter distance from the property line, particularly for residential structures.
Nonetheless, our neighbor disregarded this regulation and built a two-story addition directly on the boundary. Initially, we didn’t think much of it, but the situation worsened when he installed an attic with a window overlooking our garden. It was this window that truly disturbed us.
Attempting to negotiate with the neighbor
As soon as we understood the situation, we tried to address the problem peacefully. We approached the neighbor to discuss our concerns, but he ignored them, claiming that his construction was already finished and he had no intention of making any adjustments to satisfy us.
Next, we contacted the city’s architectural department, hoping for legal action. While they confirmed that the neighbor’s construction violated regulations, they also acknowledged that enforcement was ineffective. Even if we took the matter to court and won, there would be no significant consequences, as the authorities wouldn’t compel him to remove the extension.
Our innovative solution
Since pursuing legal action wasn’t practical, we decided to handle the situation ourselves. There was an old shed near the boundary, so we modified it—raising its height and adjusting the roof to fully obstruct the neighbor’s intrusive window.
