A couple defied the doubters and proved doubts unfounded when they married in 1995, becoming the first couple with Down syndrome to become husband and wife, both in the UK and worldwide. We often come across moving stories of true love overcoming obstacles. However, when such stories involve people with physical or mental disabilities, they become even more impactful. One such inspiring story is that of Tommy and Maryanne Pilling, who showed the world that love transcends all boundaries and has the power to make anything possible.
Maryanne was born on 17th May 1971. Although she had a loving mother, Linda Martin, and a caring sister, Lindi Newman, her caregiver, life was not always easy for her. Rejected by her father, Martin’s first husband, Maryanne nevertheless grew up into a lively and outgoing young girl thanks to her mother’s love and support. Tommy was born on 21st March 1958 (World Down Syndrome Day)As an only child orphaned at the age of 12, Tommy grew up in a foster home in Essex. The lack of close support affected his development, and he paid little attention to his physical appearance. Tommy and Maryanne met in 1990 while working in the kitchen of a local training home for people with disabilities. I| was 32 at the time, while she was only 19.
They shared many interests, including a love of cooking, music, dining out, watching movies, or simply enjoying crafts together. The couple also loved to dance, as Tommy was a huge Elvis Presley fan, and he was not shy about expressing his love in front of Maryanne and her family once he became more comfortable with them.Soon, they began dating, and after 18 months, Tommy proposed to Maryanne. However, as a true gentleman, he asked her mother’s permission first, who had no reservations. She blessed the happy couple. Despite the snide comments and criticism, Martin always supported his daughter.
On July 15, 1995, Tommy and Maryanne were united in a grand ceremony surrounded by 250 guests. They walked down the aisle at St. Mary The Virgin Church in Essex, England becoming the first couple with Down syndrome to marry in the UK and worldwide. After their wedding, Tommy lived with Maryanne’s family for seven years. The couple then moved into their own flat next door, with Maryanne’s sister Newman becoming their carer.
Newman shares her thoughts on their beautiful relationship: “He listens from the sidelines, and she loves that. What keeps their marriage so strong is that there’s never an ulterior motive. They love each other with all their hearts and are honest with each other.”
