# “How many children will I have?” was the one question I could never answer, because life had a completely different plan for me.
I had imagined that pregnancy would be filled with happy questions.
Would my baby have my eyes? Would they inherit their father’s smile? Would we have one child, two, maybe three someday? I had even caught myself wondering what our family photograph would look like years from now. ❤️

But there was one question I kept asking myself again and again.
How many children would I have?
I never imagined that one ordinary appointment would turn that innocent question into something I would remember for the rest of my life.
I was already several months pregnant when I went for another ultrasound. I walked into the clinic feeling nervous but excited, placing one hand over my growing belly.
The doctor smiled as she prepared the equipment.
“Everything will be fine,” she said gently.
I smiled back.
Then the room became strangely quiet.
The doctor moved the ultrasound probe slowly across my abdomen. She looked at the screen, then adjusted the machine and examined the image again.
I noticed the change in her expression immediately.
“Doctor?” I asked.
She didn’t answer right away.
My heart began beating faster.
“Is something wrong with my baby?”
She finally looked at me.
“There is something unusual that I need to examine more carefully.”
My hands became cold.
I swallowed hard and tried to remain calm.
Then, almost without thinking, I asked the question that had been in my mind since the beginning of my pregnancy.
“Doctor… how many children am I going to have?”
She looked at me for several seconds.
“I can’t give you that answer yet.”
Those words frightened me more than anything else she could have said.

I wanted a simple answer. One baby. Two babies. Something I could understand.
Instead, I left the examination room carrying uncertainty with me.
Over the next few days, I underwent additional examinations. Every appointment seemed longer than the one before it. Every time the doctor studied the scans, I searched her face for some sign that everything would be okay.
Finally, she asked me to sit down.
My husband held my hand.
The doctor took a deep breath.
“We’ve discovered that you are carrying three babies.”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
Three.
Three tiny lives were growing inside me.
I should have been overwhelmed with happiness.
But the doctor continued.
“Two of the babies are conjoined twins. They are developing together and will need extremely careful monitoring.”
My husband squeezed my hand.
I stared at the doctor, trying to understand what she was telling us.
“And the third baby?” I whispered.
The doctor lowered her eyes.
“The third baby initially appeared completely healthy. But unfortunately, that baby’s growth has stopped.”
Everything inside me seemed to collapse.
“No…”
I placed both hands over my stomach.
“No, please. You said the baby was healthy.”
“He was,” the doctor said softly. “But something has changed, and we are deeply concerned.”
I began crying.
How could three babies become two in the space of one conversation?
How could I love three children I had never even held and already feel terrified of losing one?
I didn’t want to choose between my babies.
They were all mine.
That night, I barely slept. I kept touching my stomach and whispering that I loved them.
“Please keep fighting,” I cried. “All of you. Please.”
The doctors continued monitoring the pregnancy, but the situation became increasingly dangerous. The conjoined twins needed urgent medical intervention, and the third baby’s condition was no longer improving.
Then came the conversation I had been dreading.
The medical team explained that waiting could put the remaining babies at even greater risk.
An emergency operation was necessary.
I remember sitting there in the hospital bed, trembling beneath the white sheets.

“Will they survive?” I asked.
The doctor couldn’t promise me anything.
“We will do everything we can.”
That was all I needed to hear.
I signed the papers with shaking hands.
Before they took me into surgery, I placed my hand over my belly one last time.
“I don’t know how many children I’ll get to hold,” I whispered through my tears. “But I promise I’ll never stop loving you.”
The operating room doors closed.
Hours passed.
Then finally, the doctor came toward my husband.
“We were able to save the conjoined twins.”
My husband broke down crying.
And when I woke up, the first thing I asked was not about myself.
“How are my babies?”
The doctor smiled gently.
“They’re fighting.”
I closed my eyes and cried.
I had entered that clinic believing I only needed an answer to one simple question.
How many children will I have?
Now I understood something completely different.
Sometimes life doesn’t give us the number we expect.

Sometimes it gives us moments of fear, impossible choices, heartbreak, and hope all at once.
I still don’t know what the future will bring for my family.
But every time I hear my babies fighting to survive, I remember that motherhood was never about counting how many children I would have.
It was about loving every little life I was given, with everything inside me. ❤️
