However, this item—despite its small and modest appearance—has had a tremendous impact on human
history.
It is a microscope—one of the earliest ever made, created by Dutch researcher Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in
1670. He was the first person to observe microscopic organisms, laying the foundation for the science of microbiology.
Unlike many scientists, Leeuwenhoek had no formal education. But his curiosity and precision led him to
build over 500 microscopes in his lifetime, only 13 of which have survived to this day. Thanks to this tiny
device, people were able to study blood, muscle tissue, hair, insects, and even microorganisms living in a
drop of water.
Today, one of these rare original microscopes is up for auction in the United Kingdom, valued at around
€18,000. The news has already caught the attention of Dutch media.
